A common mistake even for those of us who have English as our native language. Here is a quick overview of which ‘there’ to use.

1. There

The most common of the three. It is usually used when referring to a place or position.

2. Their

Their is the possessive adjective and indicates the owner of a particular noun.

3. They’re

This is a contraction and is short for they are. This is always used as a subject.

Hints & Tips

there – the word here is inside the word there to remind you it is for a location.
their – the word he is inside their to remind you it is a word for people.
they’re – simply expand the contraction and see if the sentence still makes sense with they are.
